You might think that tree photography sounds a little boring, but you’d be surprised that, with a bit of work and persistence, not only can you produce some beautiful artistic images, but you may find you’ll learn a lot about photography.

This is a tree, nothing more..... Just a tree.

Most people passing by will also see this as just a tree. But a tree like this, from a certain perspective, and through the lens of a camera and the eye of a photographer ceases to be just a tree and becomes a work of art.

This tree is in the little village of Volavlje, to the east of Ljubljana, Slovenia. When I first spotted this tree, I instantly saw its potential.

From this viewpoint down below on the road, the tree is isolated from the rest of the landscape, with just the sky behind.

When you can isolate a tree to create a minimalist view, it has great potential.

And if you are able to revisit a location like this, as I have been, you can work this potential to the max in different light and weather conditions, and in different seasons.

So over the years that followed, I did just that. And what follows are the results from my visits over many years.

A scene like this can really help to develop your photographic eye.

Revisiting a simple scene like this and working it in different light, different times of the year and different weather, is a great lesson in landscape photography.

It teaches you that each time you photograph even the same scene, it will look very different.

And that is the same with every scene you photograph.

So find yourself a tree close to where you live, and get out there and try some tree photography.

And revisit it time and time again at different times of the year, different times of the day and in all weather conditions.

You’ll be amazed at what it will teach you.
