One of the places I just had to visit while down in Dorset earlier this year was the wonderful Kimmeridge Bay, by far my absolute favourite place on this beautiful stretch of coast.

Basanija – Istrian Peninsula

Basanija is small settlement on the Istrian Peninsula with a unique sight to photograph.

The hanging gallows of Combe Gibbet, on Gallows Down near the village of Combe, West Berkshire / Hampshire border. Erected in 1676 for the purpose of displaying the bodies of George Broomham and Dorothy Newman after their execution for murdering his wife, but has only ever been used for them. The gibbet was placed in this prominent location as was meant as a warning, to others of what happens to criminals. I grew up near here and often visited this place, but only thought of photographing it now. As luck would have it, I arrived as a storm was blowing over at sunset, blessing this region with stunning light as the clouds cleared over from the west. This hill provides commanding views across Hampshire and West Berkshire.

How to find great photography spots

As a landscape photographer I’m always trying to find great photography spots. There is one place I’ve known about for a long time, but it’s a seasonal lake, which means that you can only photograph it after long periods of heavy rain. Recently, after several weeks of rain, I not only got the chance but was also able to find an outstanding viewpoint thanks to a new photography location website called Photohound.

Coming up in a few weeks is the annual event when the full moon rises over the mountain peak behind Jamnik Church. Be sure not to miss it.

Finding a new perspective

At first I was annoyed when the usual road to Sveta Ana church was closed and I was diverted through the village of Kamnik pod Krimom. But when I chanced upon this viewpoint showing both these churches in an adjacent setting, I forgave them. It just goes to show how driving around can reveal all sorts of different perspectives.
