The Pagan Girl, also known as “Ajdovska Deklica” in Slovene, is entwined with local folklore, symbolizing a mythical giantess who was turned to stone.
After photographing Jamnik Church at sunrise, I headed over to the other great church view in Slovenia; Saint Thomas Church in the Skofja Loka hills.
I had been watching the weather forecast and Lake Jasna on the webcam most of the week only see clear blue skies. But finally on Friday the weather began to change.
Sometimes a moment takes you by complete surprise. This evening was no exception. I was on a hike up to Smlednik Castle with my family. From this viewpoint you get a fabulous panoramic view of the Kamnik and Julian Alps. However, looking at the conditions I hadn’t expected much to happen. Even so, I have learned never to leave my camera in the car. A lesson learned the hard way in the past. Well, thank god I had learned that lesson….

Clear blue skies are a landscape photographer’s nightmare. It’s hard to know what to photograph on a sunny day with just blue skies. But when you get them, you just have to work with it. More often than not, if you are patient and look hard enough, there is always something you can make out of it all.
There are many lovely castles in Slovenia, but the old ruined castle at Smlednik is possibly the most interesting. In particular, the views from the top are some of the best in the country.
The best sunrise images are not always what you had planned. On this morning I had something different in mind, but got something far better.
