The Istrian peninsula
At the far north-western corner of Croatia, stretching down from the borders of Italy and Slovenia, the Istrian Peninsula is a stunning place. It’s packed with great photography locations, too numerous to mention in one article. So in this part I’m going to show one at the northern part of the peninsula.
Savudrija
Comprising the far northern part, Savudrija is probably the name that most people would have heard of when it comes to this part of the Istrian Peninsula, as it is better known. However, when holidaying there one year I discovered a great little place just to the south of the Savudrija region called Basanija.
Basanija - Svjetionik Beach
Basanija is small settlement that comes under the municipality of Umag. Its claim to fame is that it’s the most western part of Croatia. Much of the Istrian Peninsula comprises a rocky coastline which is great for coastal photography. You’ll find many great rocky outcrops to photograph, particularly at sunset. Sunset is best because Basanija lies on the western side of the peninsula.
While there are numerous little bays and beaches along this fabulous coastline, my favourite around Basanija is Svjetionik Beach.
A unique photo of wooden boat stands
As I said you can get great photos of rocky ledges and outcrops at sunset along this coast pretty much anywhere, but what I love most about this particular part of the Istrian Peninsula is the unique little jetties with wooden boat stands. These stands are used by fishermen to hang their boats for protection against damage caused by the weather. Large frames made from wooden poles jutting out from the concrete are used for this.
These piers, wooden racks along with the rocky outcrops at low tide make a really unique sight, and a great photo at sunset.
In summer
Summertime isn’t always the best for photography, but at this time of year the sun will be further north and therefore you can more easily get it in your frame as it sets over the beautiful Adriatic Sea. While it’s busy here during the day, come sunset the crowds have usually gone and you can likely get a shot of this without people.
Savudrija Lighthouse
Across the little bay where the beach is situated, there is another great feature to photograph; the famous Savudrija Lighthouse. This is the oldest active lighthouse on the Adriatic, and was built in 1818. It’s also the northernmost lighthouse in Croatia.
There is a legend associated with this lighthouse. Read about it here in my other article:
