Sometimes a moment takes you by complete surprise. This evening was no exception. I was on a hike up to Smlednik Castle, just north of Ljubljana, Slovenia, with my family. From this viewpoint you get a fabulous panoramic view of the Kamnik Alps and Julian Alps. However, looking at the conditions I hadn’t expected much to happen. Even so, I have learned never to leave my camera in the car. A lesson learned the hard way in the past.
Well, thank god I had learned that lesson, because once at the top I was surprised to see the moon rising over the eastern edge of the Kamnik Alps. I quickly set up and captured a few close ups with some interesting cloud formations above it. But the real moment came just as the sun hit the horizon the cast a stream of lovely soft, warm light across the foot of the mountains.
I could see Tunjice church bathed in the golden glow along with other buildings nearby. Having shot from this area many times I already knew the lay of the land, and this interesting church. So I quickly pulled back and framed up this shot before that brief golden glow disappeared once and for all.
This is a moment that reminds you of how knowledge of a location really helps when a moment presents itself and you have to think fast.
