After glow at the Church of Saint Jakob

On the run up to sunset this evening, it hadn’t seemed like it would be anything great. Thick black cloud dominated the western horizon and the light was quite cold. However, given that the cloud layer was quite patchy I held out hope for some afterglow.

The colour burst through

This is the church of Saint Jakob (Sveti Jakob) in the little village of Hrase, near Medvode in Gorenjska, Slovenia. It’s just a 15-minutes drive from the capital, Ljubljana. The mountain peeking through the cloud behind is Mount Storzic of the Kamnik Alps. I have photographed this church many times before from a different angle, which puts the rest of the Kamnik Alps behind. But I had been eyeing this particular view for a while now from the roadside as I passed. On this day, I gave it a try.

While the moment of sunset passed without anything spectacular, the afterglow made up for it. Suddenly that cold light exploded and the whole place was bathed in warmth for a short period of time. Enough to crack off a few different compositions. This is my favourite.
