Bled Lake is one of the most photographed places in Slovenia
As the latest round of restrictions mean that during the peak of the autumn colours I am unable to get to Bled Lake, all I can do is reminisce on past autumn shots.
Although Bled Lake is probably one of the most photographed locations in Slovenia, it never fails to provide a unique moment. On this particular day the light was tremendous. It was the start of my Autumn in Slovenia photography workshop in 2018. The forecast for the weekend had been terrible, and there was a bad weather front moving in. However, as is often the case, the moment before the weather takes a change for the worse was the best time to be out.
As the stormy weather approached, fast moving broken cloud allowed the sun to burst through in places, which spotlighted the lake, church and castle. This had the effect of selectively lighting up all the glorious autumn colours for the participants on my photography workshop that year; albeit the only day they would get, but at least it was a day to remember.
We went up to Mala Osojnica for this spectacle, one of two great elevated viewpoints around the lake. Mother Nature treated us to a wonderful display. Fast moving clouds were breaking and spotlighting parts of the lake creating great moments like this, with the island church and castle spotlit.
A sharp eye
At times like this you need to have a sharp eye and be ready to react. Many photographers will tell you to setup a composition and wait for the light. Well, in situations like this it’s the opposite. You need to pre-plan a basic outline of compositions but be ready to react and adjust according to what the light is doing and what is going on in the sky, and be prepared to adjust your composition to suit.
Sunset and Blue Hour
We came down to the lakeside for dusk and sunset. Well, it seemed Mother Nature hadn’t finished. While the sunset was good, the piece de resistance came right at the sweet spot of blue hour and we got this incredible display of clouds.
2020 Photography Workshop cancelled
Sadly, due to Coronavirus my 2020 Autumn Photography Workshop had to be cancelled. Hopefully, see you next year.
