I spent Christmas Day in a lovely region just outside Ljubljana where you can get a fabulous panoramic view of nearly all the Slovenian mountains. For the first time in many years we actually had a white Christmas, albeit sparse but still white and Christmassy!

Two days before Christmas day, snow fell overnight and much of it has remained. In this area where we spent the day there is a hill which affords stunning panoramic views of three of Slovenia’s mountain ranges: Sneznik, Julian Alps and Kamnik Alps. On a clear day you can see them all, and at sunset it was perfectly clear.

So I thought I would share with you some photos from my Christmas Day sunset shoot.

Snežnik Mountain

Looking southward you can see Snežnik Mountain. It is the highest non-Alpine peak in the country, standing at 1,796 metres (5,892 feet). Part of the Dinaric Alps, it is known for its pristine natural beauty, offering panoramic views that stretch from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea on clear days. The mountain is surrounded by dense forests and karst landscapes, making it a haven for diverse flora and fauna, including bears, lynxes, and endemic plant species.

Krim Mountain

Pan to the right and you get Krim Mountain, located near Ljubljana. Krim rises to an elevation of 1,107 metres (3,632 feet) and is located in the Ljubljana Marshes region. Known for its strategic views, the peak offers stunning panoramas of the capital city, the Julian Alps, and the Karavanke range. Historically significant as a military observation point, Krim is now a popular destination for hikers and cyclists, featuring trails through lush forests and karst terrain. The mountain is also valued for its biodiversity, with a variety of plant and animal species thriving in its natural environment.

At this time of year the sun sets just to the left of Krim from here.

The Julian Alps and Mt Triglav

Continue panning to the right and you then get a magnificent view of the Julian Alps and Mt. Triglav. Standing at 2,864 metres (9,396 feet), Triglav is the highest peak in Slovenia and the Julian Alps, a stunning mountain range that forms part of the Southern Limestone Alps. As a national symbol, Triglav holds cultural and historical significance, even appearing on Slovenia’s coat of arms.

The Julian Alps, known for their dramatic limestone peaks, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear lakes, are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as hiking, climbing, and skiing. Triglav National Park, which encompasses much of the range, protects its rich biodiversity and pristine natural landscapes, making it a must-visit destination.

Church of Saint Nicholas

Before we hit the next set of peaks, there is also a lovely view of the Church of Saint Nicholas in the hilltop village of Janče. From this point you do get to see a glimpse of Mt. Grintovec, behind the tree on the right, but there is another location nearby where you get this church with the full splendour of the Kamnik Alps behind. See further down for those photos.

The Kamnik Alps

Last but not least, pan to the right and you get a fabulous shot of the Kamnik Alps.

The Kamnik Alps, or Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe, are a picturesque mountain range in northern Slovenia, bordering Austria. Known for their rugged limestone peaks, lush valleys, and alpine meadows, they reach their highest point at Grintovec, which stands at 2,558 metres (8,392 feet). This range is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities like hiking, climbing, and skiing. Popular spots include the scenic Logar Valley and Velika Planina, a traditional shepherd’s settlement with charming wooden huts. Rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, the Kamnik Alps are a captivating destination for nature lovers and adventurers.

The section below shows the eastern section of these alps, the prominent peak just to the right of the centre is Ojstrica.

The Kamnik Alps from another nearby location

As I said earlier, from another nearby village you get to see the full range of the Kamnik Alps with the Saint Nicholas Church in front, and from another viewpoint, Saint Margaret’s Church.
