This image far exceeded my expectations. I had been watching the sunset over Bled the evening before on the Bled webcam and saw how the sun was going down close to the Julian Alps from this perspective. So I headed out the next day.
I already knew where to get the best composition, having shot this scene many times before. There is just one place to stand to ensure you get a clear composition of the Julian Alps beside the castle, and you also get to see the very tip of Mt. Triglav (the highest peak in Slovenia). So I set myself up and prepared for the moment when the sun went down over the mountains. I had already seen the night before on the webcam that this would happen around 7 PM!
But I never expected that the sun would go down right behind Triglav itself! What a magnificent piece of luck, and thank god I was prepared for it.
A classic case of research, location knowledge, preparation and a healthy dose of good fortune has resulted in this beautiful image!
